Yvonne McGreggor - The Osteopathic Surgery's Clinical & Sports Massage Therapist

Yvonne's whole life has been very much centred around competitive sport; initially as a runner, then as a triathlete and finally, through injury, she found that cycling was best suited to her physiology.

Yvonne set herself tough but realistic targets each season, always gave 100% effort and focus to her training, and can now look back on her career and feel extremely privileged to have been able to experience success at the highest echelons of her sport.

Yvonne's working career has been somewhat varied to fund her various sporting endeavours. However, at the same time, she has principles, too, and has never been able to do a job ‘just for the money’. Yvonne's work has also had to be fulfilling, and she found her greatest satisfaction whilst employed in the caring professions; in particular working with people with special needs.

And so to the final chapter in Yvonne's career! After retiring from competitive Cycling with the Great Britain Team, and medalling at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, Yvonne knew she had to find a career that was to give her new challenges and a new focus, but above all the self-satisfaction and self-fulfilment that had always been important to her. Sports massage therapy has given Yvonne that in abundance and has felt like a totally natural progression for her; combining her sport, capacity to care and the human interaction she enjoys so much.

Clinical and Sports Massage

Clinical and Sports Massage should play an important role not just in any sportsperson’s life, but for anyone who regularly suffers from muscular tension.

Massage will

  • Maintain the body in better condition
  • Prevent injuries, muscle imbalances and loss of mobility
  • Restore mobility to injured muscles tissue
  • Enhance performance
  • Extend the overall life of a person’s sporting career

Physical Effects are:

Increased tissue permeability – Deep massage helps remove waste products such as lactic acid, encouraging muscles to take up oxygen and fresh nutrients to help them recover quicker

Stretching – Massage can help stretch bundles of muscle fibres, both lengthways and sideways, so releasing any tension or pressure build-up. This is especially important to those with desk and computer based jobs where back, neck and shoulder problems are prevalent.

Break down scar tissue- Scar tissue is the result of previous injuries and can affect muscles , tendons and ligaments. This can lead to inflexible tissues that are further prone to injury and pain.

Improves tissue elasticity – Intensive training can make muscles hard and inelastic and therefore inefficient. Improvements are less likely and injuries almost inevitable. Massage helps reverse this process by increased circulation and stretching the tissues.

Opens micro-circulation – Massage increases blood flow to tissues dilating the blood vessels, enabling nutrients to pass through more easily. Conversely, a tight muscle deprives the tissues of vital nutrients and energy to repair.

Relaxation – Massage causes muscles to relax through heat generation, increased circulation and stretching of tissues.

“Yvonne has always proved totally professional in her work whilst at the same time being very approachable and friendly with a caring capacity that immediately puts her clients at ease.”

Golf Swing Assessment and Analysis

Martin Davies is a registered PGA Golf health Professional working with many Professional and amateur golfers to improve their health. He is frequently invited to major championships across Europe to work with the top professionals.

Golf swing analysis is the first step in determining whether your injury is directly related to your swing technique. We will review your swing at the Osteopathic clinic. We will be able to see dysfunctional movement in real time, which will be explained to you in detail.  We can then implement a treatment plan that will incorporate the principles of Osteopathic medicine, which will help you achieve your goals thereby enhancing your swing and handicap.

Ergonomic and Postural Advice

Ergonomic advice is invaluable at work and home to help prevent pain caused by repetitive movements, poor seating, desk position and computer alignment. You will also be advised on maintaining a good posture and shown how to do this to prevent aches and pains caused by poor posture during and after the working day.

Podiatry & Biomechanic

Feet are generally overlooked until they develop problems. Over a lifetime general wear and tear can take their toll on your foot health. Also general medical conditions such as diabetes can be first diagnosed through the foot. General foot care will enable you to avoid problems getting worse as well as making life more comfortable. Your foot and gait can be assessed in our general consultation in which your feet will be checked for problems and the appropriate treatment and advice offered. The foot is unique in the body due to its position and function. Although most people believe that each foot only takes half your body weight during walking in fact the true figure is about one and half times body weight. In the course of a normal day a person might take between 3 – 10,000 steps. This means that any inefficiency in foot function is multiplied many times over. This is the basis for many foot and lower limb problems. A careful biomechanical examination attempts to pick out these minor imbalances and seeks to correct them by mechanical means. A foot orthoses, although in appearance a piece of moulded plastic, works by increasing the efficiency with which the foot functions. This altered function can affect the whole lower limb, pelvis and back thus improving the body’s general posture and ability to function. Andy Hodgson is experienced in foot mechanics and can build you specialist orthotics to help you whether at work or for your sport.

Acupuncture

Primarily used for pain relief, western acupuncture involves dry needling of tight and dysfunctional tissues. Trigger point release and intra-muscular stimulation will decrease pain, release tight tissues and promote healing. This technique can be used very effectively alone or in conjunction with other physiotherapy techniques.

Cyril Irvine is a qualified and experienced practitioner who pays the utmost attention to hygiene and cleanliness in our practice.
